A set of preforming tooling for SAAB

Tue, 14 April, 2020

Loiretech (www.loiretech.com) is the tooling manufacturing partner of the FLEX project, in which one of the main aims is to manufacture composite aircraft parts using cutting-edge adaptive composite tools.

Despite the challenges and limitations brought on by the current worldwide health crisis, Loiretech continues to work on the final demonstrator tooling. Loiretech has already succeeded in delivering preforming tools to our FLEX topic manager (and end-user), SAAB (www.saab.com).

The function of these preforming tools is to enable the end-user to preform composite parts (i.e., laying up the reinforcement fabrics into a predetermined shape). Once assembled, those preforms with be placed into the resin transfer moulding (RTM) tool - that is currently being manufactured by Loiretech - and injected with an aerospace-grade resin in order to produce the final composite parts.

The preforming tools shown in the above pictures were made by assembling and milling wood, and were subjected to a final control step to verify their geometries.

Please stay tuned to our FLEX website so you can discover with us the next step of our work: the preparation of carbon RTM tooling.
